Week of October 12, 2009. The Future of E-mail Communications.

In today’s Wall Street Journal, you can find an article discussing the future of e-mail communications and how social networks are changing the way we communicate with others.

The article, The Email Reign Is Over , begins with the following paragraph:
“Email has had a good run as king of communications, but its reign is over. In its place, a new generation of services is starting to take hold— Twitter, Facebook and countless others. And just as email did, this shift promises to profoundly rewrite the way we communicate—in ways we can only begin to imagine.”

How do you feel about the changes discussed in this article? What kind of impact do you think these changes will have in the business environment? More specifically, in the way firms conduct business with consumers in the United States?

I believe that it will progressively change to be worse. This is because if people rely on internet communications such as Facebook and Twitter, people are more likely to use it more frequently. For example, there are people who are literally logged on to these sites all day long. Now say you’re a twitter or facebook “addict” and you’re behind a computer desk all day long, how will any work for the company of your job do well? Even now, people use the internet on their cell phones to log onto these websites just to talk to other people instead of using that cell phone to call the person. Say I worked at CVS, but I’m constantly on my cell phone posting comments on twitter every other minute; I would lose a customer every other minute just posting messages so people I don’t even know can read them. Don’t get me wrong, it’s another way of communication, but it’s not the only way.

I believe this new way of communicating will destroy businesses boundaries and allow consumer intervention that will be less than helpful. It is unrealistic that businesses will be able to respond to consumers using a a social networking site. The only difference between email and these networking sites is that you are able to see a face with a message and others are able to too. This breaks down the ability companies have to deal with problems privately. Companies need some privacy from the outside world in order to maintain its infrastructure.

I feel as though social networking sites such as “Twiiter” and “Myspace” will not be replacing email as the primary form of communication for businesses in the future. I do not forsee CEO’s and president’s of multi-million dollar corporations “Twiitering” their colleagues. I think that e-mail will remain the primary form of communication because it is a much more formal way to send letters and such to people. Social networking sites may be one way that people will communicate, but I don’t think it will take over.

I do not entirely agree with the article that e-mail will soon die off. E-mail still has a few traits that so far make it different from other communications like being traceable, being able to be archived and previous entries being able to be unalterable. These three things I believe will keep e-mail alive for now, at least in the business world. However wherever the people go, bulk marketing will follow. With the advent of twitter, facebook postings, and google wave, communication has become less personal and more in “real-time” with constant streaming. This might in turn make advertisers have to better understand psychologically whoever it is they are selling too.

I do somewhat agree with what the article states, pertaining to e-mail communications. In the business world today you can already see evidence of e-mail slowly being vanquished or put to the “way-side.” All one has to do to in order to see this is look at what is occuring at this very moment on all social networking websites such as Twittter, Myspace, and Facebook. On these websites companies bombard the user with advetisements, create their own pages, exchange information with the consumers, and deliver all other information that was once strictly utilized by way of e-mail. I believe this is the way businesses will ultimately conduct almost all aspects of their respective entities in the future!

Just as teleconferences and writing letters died, so will the e-mail. The idea of social networking via the web is a brilliant idea for businesses. Websites such as facebook and myspace allow instant communication with others and unlike email, facebook and myspace let you target/ be friends with whom you want. So, businesses will be able to pinpoint their consumer group for whatever product they are selling and advertise to those that they feel will want it or need it. It is a more effecient way of advertising. For instance I check my email about once a week, and i check my facebook like 10 times a day. Just like we saw a paradigm shift to the almighty email, we are now seeing an even bigger paradigm shift to social networking via the internet. R.I.P. email.

e mail has been on the way out for quite some time now. with all of theses new “advancements” in technology like twitter and facebook people can know exactly what their friends and loved ones are doing at all times. instead of writing an e-mail which they might check at some point durring the week you can just post something on facebook and most likely they will check it and respond with in a day. the one place that you still seem to find email still doing well is in schools and big business. this is because sending facebook comments to your boss is probably not the best or smart way to talk with a colleague. but when it comes to my generation these applications have with out a doubt shut email out as the top way to contact and speek with others. so i think it is safe to say that we can shut the door on the email age no hard feelings it was a good run while it lasted.

Communication technology today has completley rewritten social interaction. I feel technology has become so advanced that soon enough youll be able to do everything you need to do in the comfort of your own home. This might also lead to some other issues with the social aspect but is giving buisnesses a far more easier way to operate and deal with clients or customers. Buisnesses that use this new technology are becoming extremly efficiant and are able to get many things done in a very little amount of time. Cyber technology is easier, faster and in many ways cheaper. As communication throughout the world becomes faster and easier, commerce will also come easy.

If there is a service that is used the most frequently by most of the Web users, it must be email. The invention of email is often thought to be the killer application of Internet. Without email, the adoption of Internet might have been delayed for several years. With the rise of new services such as instant message, wiki, Twitter, and all kinds of social networking functions, email is already no longer the solely primary choice for online communication

  10. Fellowsm says:

The changes to the internet lifestyles branched from E-mail. E-mail was the way to go for so very long but now it is twittering, facebooking and all the other networking sites. These sites are more for leisure activities than it is business, but they create many distractions while at work. I myself have facebook connected to my blackberry and anytime someone sends me something i get an immediate alert to my cell. I see this creating problems within a business with workers not getting things done but i don’t see it becoming a new way of communication for businesses and their cliental.

  11. That_Guy says:

E-mail is out, Blackberries, texting, twitter and facebook are in. E-mail had a good run and sort of paved way for these new technologies, but now it is just not as convenient as texting or live chat. Now we can relay the same messages without the hassle of logging into you email account to check you messages. with blackberry’s and cell phones alike we can now send messages instantly with no logging or or anything of the sort, all you need is your blackberry of phone and your connected. This is a major upgrade for businesses whereas they can now relay important information a lot fast than with E-mail, because now instead of having to check your inbox every so often your blackberry or phone alerts you the instant your receive a message making the process of relaying information at more efficient.

  12. Default says:

I do not agree with this at all. Social networking sites might be a great way to communicate with family or friends but I do not think that it will take over in the business world. It does not look professional enough to really attract customers and what’s next Wall-Mart sends you a drink? (Referring an application on Facebook, you can send friends drinks). I think that email will stay for a while longer or until somebody creates a bussenius networking site. There is a big difference between social and business sites and they need to maintain there differences to be who they are.

  13. ddiamant01 says:

I beleive that e-mailing will phase out completely. Everyone now is either using Facebook, or Twitter to communicate online. People are even communicating via text messages. Not only do people use Facebook, and Twitter on their computer, but also on their cell phones. By having Facebook, and Twitter on a protable device like that, emailing will phase out quickly.

  14. Awesome says:

Email will not be phased out by social networking sites. Social networking sites are a convient way to communicate with friends however businesses will not use social networking sites for business related deals. Social networking sites do not have the same professional format and feel as an email.

  15. veneca says:

I do not see the social nerworking force taking over Email as a way of doing bussiness. this sites may be wonderfull to casually socialize, but as far as making bussiness goes it won’t work. It will brake barriers and privacy much needed in the bussiness world. Private Emailing between two people or among members of a organization has more sense proffesional speaking than posting comments on twittter or face book.
    Email is her to stay.

  16. jleclair09 says:

The future is deffinitly with wireless communications among other technological advances. E-mail is in the now, everyone has a form of communication most people choose to go wireless or e-mail. I beleave it is better than regular mail. Its faster almost inexpesive and easy to use. Its a good thing e-mail was created it most deffinitly has a big effect on the business world. Offices in japan need to reach offices in the U.S. sometimes phones just dont work so e-mail is deffinitly one of the best creations since bread.

Because of the current economic situation, it is better to start a new business which can be backed up by the government. One of the governmental priorities is health and well being(fight against child’s obesity). To make a campagny which produses fast, healtier, tasty and cheap food. This will hire nutritionists, cooks and specialists of the field. No matter how good or bad the economy might be, good diet will alway be necessary for human being, especially a child.
