Week of April 26, 2010. Let’s talk Ebay

What makes EBay special?

Being a pioneer in an industry flooded with fraud and short term survival rates can have its advantages. For EBay, it proved to be critical. I give you a hint; it’s all about its customers.

Review EBay’s business model and perform a SWOT analysis by identifying the company’s STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES, OPPORTUNITIES and THREATS. Remember, the first two are internal factors affecting the organization while the last two are external factors affecting the company’s business environment. Feel free to point out errors in someone else’s comment if you feel the author has identified external factors as internal or vice-versa.

Ebay started out by named Pierre Omidyar. It was meant to be similar to an online garage sale. It grew into a marketplace for the sale of goods and services. Ebay offers everything you could possibly think of. For example, cars, real estate, concert tickets, and rare items. They have many sellers who sell the same item so you can get the best price out there. Also, some of the sellers offer free shipping. I think one of Ebays strengths is that there are a lot of sellers on its site and you can shop around. Its also a great idea that most sellers have reviews from previous customers. This helps a great deal when you are deciding which seller to order from. Ebay is so big there is a wide selection of many different products. As far as weaknesses, I really cannot think of any. Ebay is a great way to shop, to shop for bargains, and hard to find items. I think consumers will not find better bargains anywhere else. Ebay has a great strategy because a lot of people find it easier to go on the computer and search for what they are looking for versus going into stores. The only threat that I can think of is if another company similar to Ebay puts itself out there. I think some people would try the other company, but Ebay is a reputable company which has been around since 1985. Alo Ebay is seen by millions of people all over the world.

EBay has become the largest online auction store with the largest diversity of products and services globally. Strengths:The way that EBay created it’s online-retail market has to be one of it’s greatest strengths because it collects a lot of information, like how many deals has the seller or buyer had to decide on wether or not to trust them for the transaction. This creates confidence for the user to safely enter in the market and buy whatever they want, from a car engine to a nice tie. Weaknesses:Since EBay is only online and they don’t have products to sell, their business relies on their users selling their own merchandise so that makes EBay limited. EBay can only make their site user-friendly for the members and the rest is up the the transactions between them. Opportunities:EBay has been looking to grow it’s company by giving more benefits to the members. They bought PayPal to help members become more confident in managing money through the online market in hopes of attracting more costumers. EBay also bought Skype’s Technologies to allow customers to talk online between each other for FREE to help make the transactions more efficient. Threats:SInce EBay has almost no control to how the relationships are between the members, there could be cases of fraud or identity theft. Sellers could be selling merchandise that could be replicating products that already have a patent and it could create legal heat toward EBay’s permission for such things. The customers RUN EBay.

Ebay is like an online store, minus the middle man,It’s strengths are that it was first to come up with the idea, another strenght is that it is in the business of connecting people as opposed to selling things. It’s weaknesses are it alienates certain demographic regions, products can be counterfiet, and there can be deception between buyer and seller with the aynonomous nature of technology.0ppurtunities are Skype permits new communications oppurtunities, and Pay Pal , owned by Ebay expands financial function, some threats are as with all retailers , the current economy, and limited confidentiality online.

As with many of the global internet brands, success attracts competition.in the Ebay swot it tell us that International competitors competing in their domestic market may have the cultural experience that that could give them the edge over Ebay.In other countrys their can be attacks by unscrupulos people, There are places in the world where ads are sent out over email to look just like Ebay but have no iffilation with them. with no laws to watch over this Ebay has got to police the world web to protect it brand.

I won’t touch all all of the catigories listed above, but I’ll tough on some like strengths,Opportunities, and threats. For strenghts EBAY the worlds largest onlines market where people can buy or sell anything they want. It connects individual buyers and sellers, as well as small businesses. They have quickly adopted Pay Pal so people could conviently pay online. The also got involved with Skype a leading online communications service that allows people everywhere to communicate through voice or video online for free. As far as oppertunities go they allow you to buy and sell a large range of items or other things. One or two threats with this service is Pal Pay cause with paying online there is more chance for fraud and identitiy theft. I agree with jvm781 when he or she states that “if another company similar to Ebay puts itself out there.”

  6. JBlog says:

EBay is a very popular and successful website for buying and selling goods through auction, with an extremely wide range of products to buy and sell. THe biggest strength of Ebay would be the fact that it has information on the buyers and sellers registered with the site to let other customers of the site know how much one can rely on other customers of the site selling or buying products. A big weakness with Ebay is that the seller can choose their own form of how they want to be paid, so if there is a money transfer the buyer could lose their money and the seller could just not send the product and not log back onto EBay under that name. A opportunity for Ebay that they did recently was join paypal and skype so the buyer has more confidence with the seller because they have a chance to speak to one another. Lastly a threat to EBay is Google’s newest invention called Google checkout which is similar to paypal by paying for online purchases and also provides fraud protection.

This is a make up blogg for Apple.Apple seem to have dusted it self off after many people wrote them off. Apple the once gaint had fallen from grace for years.in early 2000 Apple stock was around 8.00 per share but now ten years later its at over 200.00 per share .this just did not happen by accident.Apple has targeted almost all age groups with some kind of top of the line device. It markets better than any compamy before or maybe any company after.it always hit the high note and this was not always the norm for them. They have been guided by great managers and great products.Hats off to Apple

Ebay is a fantastic website that has become a widely popular website through out the world, starting off small and a bit unreliable Ebay has grown to a dedicated website. Offering the ability for its user’s to sell products via the internet in the fashion of auctions, many people use it. One weakness that I found Ebay to have is that the user’s can often sell fake products, or also steal people’s money, Ebay has been with another familiar website called “Paypal” which is another huge website that is the equivalent of an online bank account. Ebay certainly is a huge website that will continue to be huge, and fortunately no other website will be able to compete with Ebay’s popularity.

EBay’s strengths include: The knowledge and education of their management staff, the loyalty of their customers, positive customer reviews, strong reputation in the market, and it is the largest online marketplace. Their weakness is they do not or cannot give a guarantee against fraud or theft. Their opportunities include: The declining economy because more people could be looking for better deals and ways to save money, expansion of broadband services in the US and globally so more people have access to internet, and government laws and regulations that will be beneficial such as not allowing minimum retail price-fixing. Their threats include: The economy whether it is good or declining. During a good economy people may not feel the need to shop online or look for deals, they may just go to a store to spend their money. During a bad economy, people could shop and buy less or even stop shopping and buying altogether. Other threats are competitors, government laws and regulations, and changes other companies they depend on make, such as, shipping companies raising their shipping costs. The weather could also be a threat because it could delay delivery of customers orders. That is my SWOT Analysis for EBay.

  10. 5sentences says:

eBay has been successful because of the large number of clients selling goods on their web site
Looking at their business model ebay has both strenghts and weakness
A reveiw of their web site for eBay the company shows their internal strenghts, “Pay Pal which was aquired in Oct 02 enables quick, easy, secure payments on line, Skype an interent communiction system aquired in Oct 05, and Rent.com aquired in Feb 05 which is the most visted online apartment listing service in the US.”
Thier internal weakness is the ownership of “all the patents and related intellectual property aquired from Tom Woolston in 2008 for online auctions” as reported by Auction Bytes a Intdependent Trade Publication for online Merchants written by Ina Steiner on April 20,2010. The artcle goes on to say that “CEO Jnhn Donahue shut down it’s live Auction division and his strategy relies on Pay Pal’s growth not eBay’s marketplace business.” Seiner writes” eBay is unwilling to sue other online auction companys”
As many of “eBay’s competion accepts Pay Pal from its shoppers ” gives eBay an external opportuntity for growth as Amazon, Google, and Yahoo are their customers and thier online shopping business grows.
The biggest external threat to eBay Steiner writes is” with a Democratic administration in Washington the possiblity of a restraint of trade suit agaist Pay Pal.
ebay’s strenght, Pay Pal could become it’s biggest threat.

ebay is the worlds largest online auction and shopoing website where people can buy and selll all things all over the world. the big strength of ebay is it has made a very powerful platform fot both sellers and buyers. it lets the seller target their products to the buyers, it also provides buys with great search tools, to get the products they are looking for. one of the weakness of the ebay is the seller being able to enfoce the payment method like money order, which dosn’t protect the buyers, sellers can just take the money and leave the buyers hangging, therefore, buyers wont return back to ebay. and the big opportunity to ebay is its website all over the world like uk, germany, canada, etc, it significanty increased the spending limit of the consumers. a threat has appeared to ebay is its competitors. those include Amazon, google, Buy.com. etc. unlike ebay which charges sellers a listing and final transaction fee, buy.com is charging a flat 5 percent commission for items sold. google has introduced google checkout, it has been threat to ebay’s paypal. amazon is another comperitor to ebay, it main website offers millions of products like books, music, and movies….ebay has always done very well in focusing its business goals. but its better to focus more on the weaknesses and threats to make it good.

  12. jdimare09 says:

eBay is a very popular and successful online auction and shopping website. A strength of eBay is it’s customer service and a positive reputation from the good work of the employees. No company can be strong and successful without the support of customers, which you’ll only get if they are satisfied with the service you provide. Another strength is that they offer ways to protect your purchase if something unexpected happens. If you do not receive you product or if it isn’t exactly what was described, eBay will refund you’re money, according to eBay.com. A weakness is the fact that sellers choose the payment methods. eBay shouldn’t allow people to choose this, because it’s risking the customer’s money. If a buyer sends money to a seller, then that leaves the buyer to trust that the seller will actually send the product and not try to rip them off. A threat is that eBay cannot guarantee you’ll receive your product, or that it will be exactly what you thought you ordered. Also, there’s always the chance of fraud through internet purchases. An opportunity of eBay is that they now support PayPal accounts, which can help decrease fraud and make online purchases safer. Even though eBay has major threats and weaknesses, it’s still a very successful and widely used website.

  13. pj2daej2 says:

EBay has survived through fraud, misrepresentation, and some exploitation because of one simple word, convenience. One of eBay’s strengths is it is very easy to go one the internet and search the exact product your looking for with in most cases multiple sellers. EBay also has a rating system that shows the buyers how reliable the sellers are. One of the weaknesses to eBay is it is hard to overcome the fraudulent ways of some of its users. It is very easy advertise a product that you don’t actually posses but it is also very easy to see who are reliable sellers by the rating system in place. EBay has also used some opportunities by using PayPal, an easy way to pay for the products that costumers buy from sellers. They also entice buyers with free shipping deals. Threats would have to be its competitors. While eBay has grown so has Google, Yahoo and other ways for people trade and buy products online.

  14. K thompso says:

Ebay is a leading competitor when it comes to buying and selling goods online. Their number one strength is that they provide endless amounts of goods and services on one website. It’s common now for people to do all of their shopping on ebay. Their biggest weakness must be all of the fraud that occurs on the site. Although they take all the necessary measures to prevent this as much as possible, people still do get away with it and that is the one thing that may scare people from buying online. As far as for opportunities for ebay they do have a marketplace that sells just about everything. One big opportunity they could take advantage of is the selling of groceries online. This is becoming a more popular commodity and with ebay already being as big as it is they could really take over this market. I wouldn’t say ebay has many threats other than from companies like amazon.com but at best they may be considered a tough competitor. Ebay is at the top of their market right now and as long as they continue to expand intelligently and improve upon their current website they should stay there.

  15. Punky76 says:

Ebay has its advantages and disadvantages. It’s strengths are that people can buy and sell items without ever leaving their home. The weaknesses of the company is there are many ways that people can think that they are buying something and it’s really just a scam. There is an opportunity that people can start their own business through Ebay. Ebays threats can be anything from fraud accounts, identity thieves, and false information about items.

  16. shoerman01 says:

Ebay was created by Pierre Omidyar and is the leading brand for online auctions. eBay has a customer to customer business model with which strong customer relationships are built. Another strength of eBay is that it has no inventory and is only a “broker” which is much more profitable than its competitors. eBay also has its weaknesses and has to work hard to prevent fraud on it’s website but is still accessible to some fraudulent activities such as marketing of counterfeited items. It also tends to have system breakdowns because it runs on the internet. eBay has recently purchased Skype Technologies as an opportunity to provide users with new ways to create business, much like when they bought Paypal to provide new services to it’s users. Other opportunities for eBay are the changing lifestyles of people and new and upcoming markets. Threats to eBay include internations and national competitors and the invasions of illegal practices on the website.

  17. MGMBoston says:

After reading about eBay I have found that the SWOT identifies the company’s business model and how they perform. First of all, I would like to talk about the company’s strengths which I have found that the term ‘eBay’ has become a generic term for online auctions in the sense that it is common to hear that someone is ‘ebaying’ or is an ‘ebayer’ or that someone is going to ‘eBay’. If a company has strength then it also has a weakness and eBay has a few but only one stood out, the organization of eBay works extremely hard to overcome fraud which include counterfeit goods being marketed to unsuspecting and suspecting people every day. Another way that theft could arise is with the redistribution of stolen goods, eBay has agreed that it does indeed leave itself wide open to a number of fraudulent activities. However, eBay has many opportunities and just recently they have agreed to buy the online telephone company Skype Technologies in a deal worth around $2.6 billion, with the use of Skype’s software it allows PC users to talk to each other for free and make cut-price calls to mobiles and landlines which I think is very innovative. However with opportunities there are threats, the threats for example can be e-mails sent to eBayers pretending to come from eBay these e-mails are illegal and often ask you of personal information such as your social security number and your credit card number. Another major threat that eBay cannot control is the rising cost in fuel prices which can change the delivery and postal fees of goods that are being shipped and received (businessteachers.org).

  18. Soxfan21 says:

Ebay is the largest online auction website with almost anything up for sale. This is a key strength for the company as most consumers dont want to be signing up for multiple websites that do the same service. Another internal strenth is their customer service which is some of the best ive experienced. They listen to the customer and work with them to solve issues. It can either be with Ebay themselves , or a buyer or seller on the market. In that case you can open up a dispute with the other party and Ebay will work as a mediator. Furthermore, the acquisition of Paypal has greatly strenthened the company. Paypay is a 3rd party website operated by Ebay for customers to pay for the goods and services they buy. People trust Ebay ( The company ) and seeing that Paypal is affiliated with Ebay helps to calm the nerves of people cautious to put their credit or bank information on the internet. The biggest weakness facing Ebay is fraud. Fraud is especially apparent on a webite because the buyer cannot physically see or touch the goods they are buying til they actually recieve them. The company tries to fraud as much as possible but it is a problem that can only be lessened and not eliminated.

Ebay has unlimited opportunity by broadening their company to service the needs of other countries around the world. Countries such as India or China where the populations vast outnumber the US can provide an entirely new market of customers. They have also seized opportunities put in front of them such as creating other websites associated with the company.

The biggest threat to Ebay currently is competition. A website could potentially undercut their fees to take market share but it is unlikely with the massive market share the company holds. However , if the company started to grow in an international market and then made it’s way to the US I think that would give a company a better chance at taking out Ebay. Another threat is the cost of shipping the goods being sold on the site. As shipping prices rise due to increases in postage and fuel customers decrease there online shopping and turn to methods where those costs arent involved. However that being said I feel there are enough incentives out there to keep customers shopping online. Also , if that scenario were to happen I think the people selling goods online would work around this problem by offering free shipping or some other incentive so they themselves aren’t losing business. Ebay has provided thousands of people with full time jobs that they rely on so the problem would fal more on the seller than the company.

  19. Nellie says:

Ebay is as strong a company as it’s loyality to is customers. By advertising gobally it has maintained its place on the web. They offer product from any number of items, such as toys, cars, and antiques as well as much much more. They are afliliated with all kinds of companys as prostores, rents.com, and paypal. Insuring that they are able to provide any type of service a customer may need. They offer buyer protection, with all the issues of identity theft this is a plus for the customers, Ebay is a company that puts its customers first which keeps them going strong, however by providing their customers with all they have in writting is a major threat, because their competitors can analysis and improve on their customer service at the same time..

Ebay is a great concept and company. As it allows anyone from an individual to a small business sell a product of their desire as long as it can be shipped and is legal to sell. This concept greatly benefits a start up business as they can have a low overhead and the ebay site can act as their storefront. For the consumer they are taking risk as they have not seen the product in person and could be getting a defective or fake product , in this case they must have trust in the seller. Ebay allows consumers to post comments about the sellers and monitors the site. I feel this is a great site , and i have used in the past . Many great deals are out there you just have to look and be carefull. They now have more payment options which make buying more effcient and safe .

  21. Suzie says:

Ebay is the leading website for online auctions and they are extremely successful. Their strengths are their worldwide reach and easy to use accessability. Everyone is online and buying and selling items is getting more and more popular. Their weaknesses are situatons of fraud, requiring to use Paypal, forgeries, and other violations from buyer to seller. Ebay still has many opportunities through expanding to become more popular in other foreign countries and also expanding by creating new related websites. As for threats, Ebay’s biggest problem is competitors, as well as the cost of shipping and the overall decline of the economy.

The biggest strength that Ebay has is the fact that customers trust the site through its reliability and customer service. Also its worldwide accessability and ability to connect buyers and sellers. Ebays weaknesses are the risk of forgery and the fact that customers dont actually hold the product or touch it before they buy it. The customers take a risk, but Ebays opportunities are endless. They have new payment options, Paypal is reliable, and Skype is opening up new communication options. Ebays threats are mainly competition from sites like amazon.com and the economy, which they cant control. Ebay is a smart and well maintained website and prove their success.

  25. Matt says:

Ebay is essentially a huge online auction website. The fact that it is so large is one of the strengths of this company. Since it is so large it can cater to the needs of just about anyone. Another strength is its ability to act only as a service, or a middle man while offering no products itself. A weakness of eBay is its inability to control what products are being sold. Since there is such a high volume of items being changing hands it is tough to monitor products that might be copyrighted, or things that might just be a scam. An opportunity for eBay is how far reaching it is becoming with websites localizing now in India, China, and countries in Europe. At the same time this is also a threat since it will have to compete with local competitors.

  26. misslily says:

    1. The strength of Ebay is very strong intern of sale and size of business. It a well known business in industry. but they need to balance themselves with their size and demand. One thing about Ebay they have a very high volume of product from small to big and from cheap to expansive. As a well known company it does make you lead the other company and more interested from other small businesses.
    2. By looking at the size of the company we see that it unbalance between customers and products. Most likely that people is going to buy stuff from retail store instead of Ebay, because the Weakness of Ebay is taking to long time to deliver. so that make their demands go down.
    3. For the opportunity is to make themselves even larger by promoting themselves and have a better customer service. Because Ebay is online most people don’t trust online purchase anymore. After all the accident happen about internet crash and fraud about still and hacking the computer, for most customers they loosing value and standard.
    4. Of all the detail about is about trust and understanding customer needs. by stop or prevent fraud and hacked all account, so build the relationship with customer to make them trust and security protection.

  27. ncoco252 says:

Ebay is easily the largest and most popular online shopping and auctioning website for many reasons. You can find anything and everything on there easily with certain ways to search and different parameters you can put on to find exactly what you’re looking for or where you should sell. Another strength is the secure feeling people get when dealing through Ebay. Set rules and structure (like Paypal) keep things running smoothly and keeps scams to a minimum.
Of course this doesn’t give everyone 100% safety. The main problem with Ebay is that you’re essentially buying goods from a stranger who you’ll never see and you don’t see the merchandise until it’s delivered to you. Another weakness for Ebay is that it can be tricky to sell and follow all the rules. A small concern in thier business is that since the business is over the internet, it’s susceptable to crashes or other problems when dealing with the internet. These weakness are small, but are present.
Ebay’s size has opened the business to new opportunuties. Ebay has bought and now controls Paypal (a safe and easy to use payment system) and Skype (a chat type program). This has made Ebay an internet powerhouse. PayPal is the best way to send money or pay for goods and Skype is the best way to communicate “face to face”. Ebay will only get bigger with these things and still has untapped resources and clients such as other countries like China and India. These opportunities are being worked on by Ebay right now.
Ebay has some threats being the big kid on the block. New competitors are trying different things and ways to sell goods better than Ebay. Craigslist is a great way to post up things for sale. This is probably a better way to sell your used things locally. If Ebay had a local approach to selling as well as having the shipping aspect, they’d control more of the online selling market. Being so big and popular can also lead to people trying to scam others since there are so many people using the site. And since you can’t actually see the seller or buyer, people can get away easily if the person who was scammed doesn’t know how to handle the situation. The size of Ebay can be a great advantage, but they have to take the nad with the good. All in all, Ebay is a great, steady business that will only grow.

  28. SneakGeek says:

E BAYS strength is it’s sellers and buyers and it’s weakness is also the sellers and buyers. It’s strength is the ability to offer it’s customers a place to sell their goods and possibly start an online business. The customers make and brake the company. Another strength are the reviews and feedback that customers leave. This is what keeps people coming to the site.At the same time it’s what keeps people away because there is a lot of bad reviews about sellers. Fraud and bootlegging and stealing are so rampant that consumers are going the safe way and paying a little more for something they no is safe. The auction is not reliable you sit there and wait until the last second to get that product and most of the time your outbid buy some software bot that some guy has programmed. Consumers also are getting impatient and want there products ASAP so they are going to where they can get it faster like AMAZON or WALMART.com.They need to eliminate the risk and fear of shopping on their site it’s not guaranteed that you are going to get what you paid for so consumers are running to other online shops. But EBAY has hard to find rare items that you cant find anywhere else. So as long as there’s sellers with rare or items priced below market value consumers will try to get a deal even if there is risk involved.

  29. cquach says:

The Strength of Ebay is the worlds largest online auction websites. It is a giant marketplace used by millions of people all over the the world to buy and sell all things one can possibly think of. It is capable of attracting vast audiences with diverse needs. The weakness of Ebay does a very bad job of controlling fake or illegal auction. One of the weaknesses of Ebay is the sellers being able to enforce the payment method of their choice. Shipping has been one of the biggest problems of Ebay. Another weakness of Ebay is its inability to control the contents of the auction and auction items. The opportunity of Ebays is that Ebay brought Skype Technologies and it is now integrated so that buyers can talk directly to the sellers. Ebay has noew started localizing its website allover the world so it can increased the spending limit of the consumer. The threats of Ebay as it is expanding and diversifying on forgein soil it may be threatened by local competitors. The biggest threat to Ebay is the scammers and the phisher which use Ebay’s name to scam people. A recent threat that has appeared as a competition to Ebay is Google.

  30. babyglvly20 says:

Ebay is succesful because of not only what you can buy you can also see products. Everyone buys from online so is makes it more popluar. There strength is that there a very strong business. There weakness is Google because there most visited too.

  31. bonez14 says:

I believe Ebay is one of the best online sites for shopping and selling items. My reason in which I say this is because I have tried a different selling site called bonanzle.com and its been very hard to sell items. Ebay’s STRENGTHS, are that it provides a large quantity of products at a low cost, also it provides extra income for individual, its WEAKNESSES is that ebay charges a cost for every little detail of information from pictures to detail information. Ebay offers a great OPPORTUNITY to anyone whom is seeking for extra income and a opportunity to start their own online business…Its biggest threats are amazon and craigslist…besides that ebay also offers the chance to get payed or pay on the spot by using Paypal the only negative thing about this is that you get charged a transaction fee besides the fee that ebay charges for inserting an item and for selling the item.

  32. Gumby says:

Ebay is extremely successful because of its customers. Its customers actually rate other sellers and buyers, for their products (if they paid quickly, or if there was a problem..ect). One of their weaknesses is in shipping, as well as its threats are becoming more clear as they offer their products in other countries. The reason on why some people are apprehensive to this company, is for the pure fact that you have no idea who your ordering from or even if u’ll get the product until it arrives.

  33. AH71988 says:

Ebay is an online auction and shopping website. Ebay generates revenue mostly from different fees. The main fees are for listing a product and about 8.75% of the final sale price. One strength of Ebay is that they work as a middleman between buyer and seller so the company itself doesn’t actually have to provide any products or services. Another strength is the convenience it offers people. You can find just about anything you are looking for on the site. This is ideal for people looking for obscure collectibles and others who need to get rid of things that have become unnecessary. Also, if you need to make quick cash it’s very easy to simply sell something through Ebay.
A weakness of Ebay is that it enables sellers to scam their buyers. For example, people will try to sell a product cheap but then charge double the cost of the item in shipping. Scamming could also be considered a threat to Ebay. There is potential for illegal sales.
An opportunity for Ebay is expansion. They have already established locations in thirty countries and I envision this number growing in the future as this company continues to thrive.

  34. DinoJen says:

Ebay is an extraordinary company. Their strengths would have to be that they sell anything you can imagine to anyone in the world for a good price. People give their offers and the best bidder wins. Their weakness has to be that anyone can sell “bad products” as “good products” online because no one will know the difference until it is received. Opportunities would have to be that anyone can access the Ebay because it’s online and pretty much easy to use. Also, since they’re such a good company, they have good motives when it comes to expanding. Finally, threats that Ebay may face are its users selling “bad products”. There could be a fake Coach purse that is only worth $10.00 and it is being sold for $400.00 on ebay.

  35. dd says:

According to EBay SWOT Analysis, EBay first target was the antique products collectors but later changed into a global market. As any other company, EBay has its own SWOT. EBay is the world largest online auction website. It also offers a diverse product to its customer’s .EBay has difficulties stopping illegal or fake auctions. The seller has the monopole of the price of the product. It is very easy to sell and buy on EBay which is very important. The threats of EBay are the scammers, the competitors in other foreign countries and also Google

Ebay is a website where anything imaginable can be bought. From concert tickets to car parts, clothes to eletronics, everything you’re looking for you can find it there. I believe that to be one of Ebay’s strenghts and also the fact that there are many sellers and you can search for the best price on an item. As of weaknesses, in my personal opinion I hate the fact that we have to bid on the items and sometimes wait for so long to know if we actually won the bid or not, I hate auctions. Ebay offers a great opportunities for people like collectors, who instead of walking around going from store to store looking for items they can just do everything from home without leaving their confort zone. As of threats, I would consider Amazon a threat to Amazon. Amazon has been doing much better than Ebay in the past three years and Amazon is growing considerably faster than Ebay did.

Ebay has a strong market, many people are shopping online hoping for discounts and lower cost. There are a few weaknesses ebay faces everyday, which is fraud and theft. The demand for online shoping is attracting online hackers. This is cause real concern for ebay bacause it can cause them to stop selling to its customers. This will obviously eventually shut down ebay altogether.

Ebay is a successful company that sells goods and services online, at better prices than regular retail. Also eBay has to thanks its success to customers and business good reviews and feedbacks. Ebay also has weaknesses but the most common one is fraudulent activities, like the redistribution of stolen goods. According to marketingteachers.com a opportunity ebay has open is the aggredment to buy online telephone company Skype Technologies in a deal reported to be worth $2.6 billion. Skype’s software lets PC users talk to each other for free and make cut-price calls to mobiles and landlines. eBay has been buying up firms – including payment system PayPal – in an effort to increase the number of services it offers to consumers and keep its profits growing. Ebay also has threads like the cost of the goods and services they can’t control because of delivery charges and creditcard charges.

The biggest strength that eBay has is the fact that the word “eBay” itself has become synonomous with online auctions. This is because over the years eBay has easily become the largest and most used online auction website in the world. As for weaknesses, probably the biggest problem that plagues eBay are sellers and buyers that deal with fraud (stolen/counterfeit goods, etc.), according to marketingteacher.com. Although eBay never condones such transactions, it’s impossible to police every user of the website. On the opportunities end, eBay is doing very well. They recently purchased Paypal, an online payment company that was an extremely popular venue for payment with eBay. They continue to snatch up other companies as well, having recently agreed to purchase Skype as well. As eBay continues to acquire these companies, the services that they offer grow which in turn can mean much higher profits. According to marketingteacher.com, the only true threat to eBay are competitors that have dominated certain international markets to the point that eBay has no chance to take over. However, aside from this there really is no immediate threat big enough to take eBay down, aside from the Internet permanently crashing.

Ebay gives people woldwide opportunity to buy and sell in the confort of their home. At the same time, comparing to other online selling site, Ebay charges a bigger selling fee to the seller because they represent the seller. ex: When you use craiglist, you get direct contact with the buyer and you don’t pay any fee. for the threat, Ebay has alot of fraud that cannot be tract down. Regardless of the of the fraud that the buyer may have to face, they try to all the necessaries measure to prevent them.

Ebay is the greatest online auction of all times! It provided sellers to sell their new or use goods to the whole world. Theirs strength lied’s in seller who can sell their products, along with seller best service feed back, which give consumers to review the sellers service feedback. ebays weakness lieds in seller bad reputation and also scammers that sell item but doesn’t exist.

I decided to write this blog in a much more technical format as writing it in an essay format would be a jumbled sesquipedalian mess.

Strengths: Ebay didn’t require a store front, product storage, they didn’t even need merchandise, so they started with very little overhead costs and is mostly community moderated so there is also relatively low staffing costs in comparison with actual physical auction houses. No physical space requirements and ability to operate on a global scale with very little staff are all humongous advantages.

Weaknesses: No way of actually guarantying products or sales. Legal issues, users can take advantage of Ebay to sell illegal items to places where they are illegal, in fact opium poppy bulb sales are huge on Ebay also illegal gun trafficking, Ebay could be held liable as a third party facilitator. Technical errors, user error, human error are all detractors.

    Opportunities:

Political: Allows people to circumvent local laws anonymously and sell/buy items that are quasi-legal in their localities, all of these sales still give Ebay commissions.

Economic: Very little overhead and start up cost.
Social: Socially moderated, opportunities for buyers and sellers to affirm good interactions and complain about bad ones, both are immensely important for word of mouth marketing. Niche communities and collectors utilize Ebay for sales of antiques and collectables, junk dealers, antiques dealers can connect with these communities, and in fact many depend on Ebay now.

Technological: Almost of all of Ebay’s advantages are technological, they can collect commissions globally and don’t actually have to store items sold via their site, for example Ebay’s roll is that of a third party who says “if you pay me I’ll connect you to someone who might buy that thing you want to sell” in real life most people would become offended by that notion but on the internet it’s perfectly acceptable.

    Threats:

Political: Possible third party culpability in illegal sales done through their site. Having to kowtow to the whims of different regional governments.

Economic: The majority of items sold on Ebay are non-essential so when people have less expendable income they are less likely to spend money on Ebay, however people may attempt to sell more on Ebay netting Ebay sales commissions.

Social: Ebay is only as honest and reliable as its users and the delivery services they rely on. If too much fraud and price gauging occurs users will stop using Ebay.

Technological: Ebay is huge right now, no major interface changes can be made easily. Startups and copy cats like iOffer can integrate new features much more easily and quickly pulling Ebay’s market share.

Synopsis: While Ebay has a genius business model it is also highly open to fraud and litigation, while Ebay has made some changes and has started to get into direct sales more other copy cats are gaining strength niche by niche and with the rise of webcams it is expected that someone will eventually integrate video sales and instant messaging for greater seller/buyer interaction making fraud tougher.

Ebays is a great advantage in the auction world with it’s diverse “sell anything you want” online maneuver holding the title of the biggest online auction site. This site gives a hand on approach trying to connect people instead of just selling a service, they focus hard on there ASP, the bigger the ASP, the larger the ASP the more profits the company can absorb. Whiling looking into the company’s SWOT, I found that there weakness through fraud and theft. The company does a great deed in trying to overcome the battle of fraud and the redistribution of stolen goods and service. This auctioning online source has to deal with competitors with the same business plan and motives ,for instance yahoo dominates Japan and competitors look for a way enhancing a company using the same approach.

Ebay has a system were the customer reviews the seller. if the seller is late with the shipment or they never send it there custmer satisfaction rating dropes. as a customer you refrain from buying from poor satisfaction ratings so people selling items tend to be very compliant to the custmers needs. also ebay succeeds because they never see the product meaning they dont have to store or maintain it. all they have to do is collect money from people using there site.

EBay is one of the largest online sellers and been expanded internationally very well. EBay’s strengths are the it is letting big brands for online auctions. As EBay required registering with them to sell or buy online which gives the buyer more confidence and trust to buy on EBay. At the same time Ebay’s Weakness is Fraud for which they are working hard to eliminate. People putting up the counterfeit goods to sell and some people put stolen stuff online which they are working hard but still take some time to properly eliminate fraud. As recently eBay bought the online telephone company known as Skype and PayPal. I think they can open several stores in U.S.A so that people who don’t like to sell online, they can go to the store to sell and buy things. They threats are that other companies can copy them and they are already lots of competitors out in the market. They have come up with different ideas to run their business.

Ebay is a website that has been in business and has been very successful. The company has no inventory because the customer provides/supplies the product on the website. The site is also a good site to auction and bid and sell etc. Companies can use Ebay as an liquidation channel and for advertisements. Ebay has a Pay Pal system that handles the transaction and sends Ebays profits to their bank account. Customers get to rate the product and the person who sold it to them to aware other consumers.

I feel as if Ebay’s greatest strength is the fact that it is the largest auction in the world. You have various items for sale ,because of the large amount of people who sell on the website. You can find anything you want or need, at the comfort of home. This is why it has become so successful, and also popular. It’s greatest weakness to me is the fact that alot of people use the website for fraud.Ebay offers opportunities, for jobs, investing, selling, buying all so conveniently to the average individual. But like Myspace, has rivals like Facebook,Twitter, so does Ebay. Competition probably is its biggest threat.

  49. Bowtech12 says:

eBay is the largest online auctioneer. eBay handles hundreds of thousands of of transactions every month. Some Strengths would have to be the diversity of products offered on the site. eBay relies on sellers, these sellers are selling items that range from books and baseball cards to cars and motorcycles. There is so much different stuff to chose from its unbelieveable. Also you are sometimes, more often than not, able to get an item and a much lower price than normal. There is also a sense of reliability and trust within eBay because of the buyer/seller protection that they offer. Also buyers are allowed to rate each seller everytime that they purchase an item off of the seller. All of this gives trust to people who you never meet! Weaknessess would be that eBay relies soley on sellers coming to them to sell their items. eBay does not have a store that you can go to and look around. Everything is done online, which can scare some people off. Oppurtunities would be that they could maybe see about starting their own Amazon type of store?! Threats would be that sellers stopped going to eBay to sell their items or another website pops up that offers the same service as eBay but at a lower price point. I have personally used eBay and their rates are crazy. I sold an item for $1,000.00 and ended up paying $75 to sell it on eBay and $45 to recieve the money on PayPal.com.

  50. P.J. Stock says:

EBay is the largest online auction site, and it caters to millions of people with millions of products and needs. Like the common saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure “, EBay allows users to post products and goods they either don’t need, or want to get rid of, and lets them test the market for the product and set their own personal price. A couple of its strengths are that there is an endless market for what products can be posted, and it’s mostly peer-to-peer, EBay just hosts the products but has no interference in the selling of such. That way if fraud occurs, EBay can’t be held accountable. That is one of the weaknesses though; there is an increasing amount of fraudulent sales being completed. One comes to mind especially, when people host highly sought after gaming systems, and people do not read the fine print and end up paying 500+ dollars for just the box and packaging of said system. Google also seized a great opportunity by acquiring peer-to-peer webcam and phone service Skype, which is a very up and coming service. If EBay can find a way to figure that into their systems, I see that as a highly effective way to combat fraud. A threat to EBay however is the new service from Amazon which hosts auctions as well. Whenever you face competition from the world’s largest online retailer, it’s always a threat. But I do think EBay will continue to be the go-to site for online auctions for years to come.
